This past weekend I had to clean out our chimney. It’s a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. It got me thinking, what other things in my life have I allowed to build up deposits? What cleaning have I neglected?
I am not talking about big problems. ( If you do have a big problem by all means get help.) But what about the little things that stack up in our lives unless we take the time to deal with them.
As we speak I have a lot of extra stuff in my bed room just sitting clogging up my space. I fill my days with too many things that don’t really lead me anywhere. I need to get back my time and space I need to clean out my life.
The past few months I have been going through a Bible study on Setting Captives Free in order to do some spiritual house cleaning and I think what I have learned can apply to other areas as well.
First, you need to realize there is a problem. I don’t like to admit when I am wrong. It is easier for my pride if I just keep the status quo. But when I had friends who said they were struggling in the area sexual purity, I had to admit that I was struggling in that area as well.
If you are a Christian, Setting Captives Free has a number of courses dealing with these issues. You can never work too hard at overcoming sin struggles.
Second, we need to identify the solution. Just recently my dad was told that he has borderline High blood pressure. He doesn’t like the idea of taking medication with various side effects, so he has decided to go about it naturally. He has been putting a plan in place that involves exercise and he changing what he eats. It has only been a couple of weeks and he has already seen an improvement.
Third, we need to create a “cleaning” schedule. For our wood burner we need to clean out the inside connector pipe every couple of weeks and then the full chimney twice a year. For other things you could have different schedules. For instance evaluate your time once a week, once a month sort through stuff and get rid of or put into storage what you are not using.
For my spiritual life I spend time every morning and evening in praying and confessing anything that hinders me. Then I have a brother that I talk to just about everyday, to keep me accountable.
Next, we need to scrub hard. This might depend on what you are trying to unclog, but if the particular area is dirty get in and get it clean. If this is affecting your life you need to get rid of it, cast it from you. The Bible says in Matthew 5 “…if your right hand offend thee, cut it off.”
What things have you unclogged from you life?
